Top steps you can take to be your child’s health advocate:

1- Educate your child about health and wellness! Teach your children about what they need to have a healthy body and mind. Help them to understand why the body needs healthy food, pure water, fresh air, sunlight, exercise and positive thoughts.

2- Provide healthy life giving nourishment! Our children depend upon the adults in their lives to offer them the basic necessities for life. They need us to give them the purest food available to “thrive while they are alive” not just survive. It is obvious that there is a clear connection between what we eat and health. Garbage in -garbage out, as the saying goes. As parents and guardians, lets make sure that our children have available the foods and drinks that nourish the cells so that they can be healthy, strong and fit. Read labels and teach your children to read and understand ingredients. Reduce and eliminate processed foods, sugar, artificial ingredients and chemicals. Include whole foods grown in healthy soil. Choose organic and locally grown foods. Offer healthy food choices and water throughout the day. Healthy eating is a habit that needs to be cultivated at home  from the people who children look to as their source for guidance, support and inspiration. Be that source for your children!

3-Be a healthy example! Children learn life habits from the people closest to them. Teaching by example is powerful and effective. Do as I say, not as I do is very confusing for children and doesn’t help them to acquire healthy habits. Show your children that you believe in health and that you are committed to living a healthy lifestyle with the choices you make everyday so that they have a foundation at home.

Why are so many children overweight or obese?

Facts about childhood obesity:

Childhood Obesity has practically become an epidemic in developed nations, with the CDC reporting that it has tripled over the last 30 years. In the United States, approximately 20% of children between the ages of 6-11 are considered obese.  Obesity is much more than just being a little overweight, it is being significantly overweight. This can lead to severe health problems. Learning about the problem and potential solutions is the first step to helping combat this problem in your own home.  There are a number of serious health conditions that arise from obesity, especially when a person’s joints and arteries are being challenged at such a young age.  Some of the main illnesses that become incredibly more likely to occur due to childhood obesity include heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, gall bladder disease and asthma. Lets help our children become and stay firm, fit and healthy! It all starts at home. Only feed your children nutritious food and keep them active. These are the 2 basic preventative steps to take. Parents need to help children to develop healthy habits that create well-being. They depend upon adults until they become accountable for their own body. Lay the foundation by making healthy choices for them and educate them though childhood and adolescence the relationship between health and what they eat, drink and think.  Become their health advocate now! Your child’s healthy growth into life depends on it!

What can you do if your child is hooked on junk food?

If a child is hooked on eating such foods – like burgers, chips, pizzas, crisps, chocolate bars and sugary drinks – then parents need to  help them move on to healthier eating habits. Not only are their children at risk of becoming obese: a poor diet can also lead to problems like heart disease and diabetes in later life. To wean a child successfully off junk food, everyone in the family needs to change their eating habits for the better. Teach children why they need to make healthier food choices. Try not to be confrontational or patronizing, but give them as much information as they need to understand.

Here are some tips to help the transition go easy:

  • Sit down to eat together as much as possible.
  • Family meals should include plenty of fruit and vegetables, whole grains, high quality proteins and unsaturated fats.
  • Make healthier versions of the foods they like to eat that fall into the ‘fast food’ category using whole fresh food and organic ingredients.
  • Get your children involved in creating meals. When they are consulted and involved, they are more likely to agree with the changes. There are many resources for healthy recipes for kids. Use it as an opportunity  to teach children where healthy food comes from and how to prepare their own food. It is very self empowering and builds self esteem.
  • Don’t eliminate snack foods all together. Do replace them with healthy snacks including veggies and dip, fruits prepared in fun and creative ways and protein shakes and smoothies made from high quality ingredients.
  • Play down the idea of food as treats and get into the habit of offering non-food rewards.
  • Praise their efforts! Give the kids lots of support and praise for their efforts to eat healthy food. They may feel under pressure from peers or from the barrage of advertising that inevitably comes their way, and will need plenty of self-confidence to swim against the tide.

Wise words:

“Child of mine, I will never do for you that which I know you can do for yourself. I will never rob you of an opportunity to show yourself your ability and talent. I will see you at all times as the capable, effective, powerful creator that you’ve come forth to be. And I will stand back as your most avid cheerleading section. But I will not do for you that which you have intended to do for yourself. Anything you need from me, ask. I’m always here to compliment or assist. I am here to encourage your growth, not to justify my experience through you.”
